Moniq!

Two magical families that have century long power struggle。 One young witch, Annis who is torn between love & loyalty,。 This book is everything you’d expect in a witchy novel + a heroine centred story。 Its got everything romance, magic, mayhem and action。 Some parts moved slow for me but I’m glad this book got me out of the reading slump! 4/5 Thank you Netgalley, Redhook books and Louisa Morgan for the ARC。 This review is my own and is not influenced in anyway!

DelightfulThis was a delightful read。 The characters were beautifully shaped and energized。 So much energy in this story。 And a happy ending。 For now。

Easy to read, not terribly complicated as far as plot goes, but entertaining。

I enjoyed the first 3/4 of this book, but the last 1/4 was。。。plodding。 The primary climax takes place fairly early in the book, and while there are loose ends to tie up, it just feels that the book is over far before it actually ends。While I'm all for tying up loose ends, it feels like many of them could have been avoided altogether。 (view spoiler)[Annis's father didn't have to send her stepmother to an asylum, which would have eliminated the need for her rescue and that bit of the storyline。 I I enjoyed the first 3/4 of this book, but the last 1/4 was。。。plodding。 The primary climax takes place fairly early in the book, and while there are loose ends to tie up, it just feels that the book is over far before it actually ends。While I'm all for tying up loose ends, it feels like many of them could have been avoided altogether。 (view spoiler)[Annis's father didn't have to send her stepmother to an asylum, which would have eliminated the need for her rescue and that bit of the storyline。 I also would have found it more interesting — or at least less predictable — if Annis and James had gone back to their animosity after the maleficia rather than falling in love。 It would have been a surprising twist for the both of them to find other love interests, but once James was introduced, it was certain how the plot was going to proceed。 (hide spoiler)]So while I enjoyed the book overall, the weakness of the ending left me with sour feelings。 。。。more

Another great book from Louisa Morgan! I loved the way feminism manifested throughout the book through not only magic but through the characters themselves。 My onlycomplaint is that the climax of the book happened with over 100 pages still left in the book, and I felt that those last pages dragged a bit。 But overall a great read!

3。5Not my favorite book I've read in the last few months, but pretty good。 I liked that the time period wasn't what you'd typically find in a book about witches。 I really liked how Morgan incorporated the powerlessness of women, and the lack of options, even for the wealthy-and how magic fit in with this theme。 I appreciated how the romance developed here, and that it was far from the main focus。 On the downside, it was a very slow book, and wasn't heavy on the action。 It felt like this was defi 3。5Not my favorite book I've read in the last few months, but pretty good。 I liked that the time period wasn't what you'd typically find in a book about witches。 I really liked how Morgan incorporated the powerlessness of women, and the lack of options, even for the wealthy-and how magic fit in with this theme。 I appreciated how the romance developed here, and that it was far from the main focus。 On the downside, it was a very slow book, and wasn't heavy on the action。 It felt like this was definitely only an introduction into this world。 I wouldn't fall over myself to recommend this, but I definitely didn't dislike it。 。。。more

Thank you to Netgalley and the Publisher for an advance ARC in return for an honest review and apologise for taking so long to read this。This novel was not what I thought it would be。 I was expecting a plot about witches but with the witch-hunting, mob mentality and witches being outcast by society。 This novel started that way but developed into a love story where the magic plays a part, but not the only part。 In fact, I felt it could almost have been a love story without the magic part although Thank you to Netgalley and the Publisher for an advance ARC in return for an honest review and apologise for taking so long to read this。This novel was not what I thought it would be。 I was expecting a plot about witches but with the witch-hunting, mob mentality and witches being outcast by society。 This novel started that way but developed into a love story where the magic plays a part, but not the only part。 In fact, I felt it could almost have been a love story without the magic part although I liked the character of Harriet。 What this story is a gentle story of love and magic, and I definitely recommend this novel for lovers of historical romance。 。。。more

This is a beautifully written, poignant story of a family of witches who face prejudice and opposition even from within their family's ranks。 It charts the ancestors of one of the Salem witches and is very much a story of the potential power of good and evil。 I really loved the subtle way in which Louisa Morgan painted and characterised the main protagonists in this story。 It was very sensitively and intelligently done, with a realism of life for women in the 1880's。 Morgan writes with a style t This is a beautifully written, poignant story of a family of witches who face prejudice and opposition even from within their family's ranks。 It charts the ancestors of one of the Salem witches and is very much a story of the potential power of good and evil。 I really loved the subtle way in which Louisa Morgan painted and characterised the main protagonists in this story。 It was very sensitively and intelligently done, with a realism of life for women in the 1880's。 Morgan writes with a style that is genuinely engaging and I did want to read on to find out what was going to happen as a result of the actions that each woman took with their respective 'gifts'。 I haven't read any previous books by Louise Morgan, but I am certainly going to seek them out now。 。。。more

I really wasn't a fan of this story, The original idea seemed interesting, but overall it turned out to be slow and boring。 The romance between the apprentice witch and the English lord was very bland and predictable。 The villain was over the top, and the main character was pretty boring as well, never doing anything interesting。 It felt like it lacked a real plot。 I finished it, so it wasn't that bad, but it definitely didn't make me want to read another one。 I really wasn't a fan of this story, The original idea seemed interesting, but overall it turned out to be slow and boring。 The romance between the apprentice witch and the English lord was very bland and predictable。 The villain was over the top, and the main character was pretty boring as well, never doing anything interesting。 It felt like it lacked a real plot。 I finished it, so it wasn't that bad, but it definitely didn't make me want to read another one。 。。。more

Very slow and kind of boring and unfulfilling to read

Once the main antagonist was out of the way, the book continued—and it shouldn’t have。 It degenerated into a sort of romance and that’s a shame。 I was disappointed to see Annis, a forward thinking young lady, end up pretty much where she didn’t want to go。

A pleasant quick read。 I kept on waiting for the plot to go completely off the rails in a predictable trite way and it never did。 Interesting enough characters and setting。 Hints at an organized but relatively unexplained magic system, the herbs were the most obvious bit。 And a mild romance。 And horses。 3。5 of 5。

I believe this author is a great storyteller, yet this book fell short in comparison to her other book, The Witch's Kind。 The Age of Witches is slow moving! It surfaces good themes around issues that have stifled women throughout history but without depth (or maybe I wasn't patient enough。。。 I didn't finish the book)。 I feel like Morgan's heart wasn't in this book; like it was done to meet a deadline rather than captivate audiences with riveting tales of witches。 I believe this author is a great storyteller, yet this book fell short in comparison to her other book, The Witch's Kind。 The Age of Witches is slow moving! This is the first book that I've read by Louisa Morgan and it wasn't quite what I expected but it kept me reading through until the end。 I liked the time period in which this story was set and the family rivalry。 Harriet was my favorite character in this book because she was a single lady who seemed a bit reclusive。 Her vast knowledge and dedication to the use of herbs appealed to me。 Overall, I loved most of the characters and the story had a nice flow to it。 The romance was a nice touch too。I This is the first book that I've read by Louisa Morgan and it wasn't quite what I expected but it kept me reading through until the end。 I liked the time period in which this story was set and the family rivalry。 Harriet was my favorite character in this book because she was a single lady who seemed a bit reclusive。 Her vast knowledge and dedication to the use of herbs appealed to me。 Overall, I loved most of the characters and the story had a nice flow to it。 The romance was a nice touch too。I give it 4 stars instead of 5 because, despite the good aspects of the book, I found it hard to pick up and continue reading at times。 It felt a little slow sometimes and other times, it was exciting enough that I couldn't wait to pick it back up and continue reading it。 。。。more

A very different kind of bookMost books about witchcraft follow the same storyline。 The age of witches is more of a love story combined with a book of herbs and their meaning。 Well-written

Light romance, strong female characters and fun。 Just the kind of escapist novel I am into right now。

An excellent read。 Horses, spells, a motherless tomboy of a girl。。。 it could be a Disney movie。 Add to that ancestral witchy powers, herbalism, foraging and dashing young lordling。。 truly a GREAT little page turner。

Louisa Morgan’s The Age of Witches follows two disparate lines of Bridget Byshop’s descendants。 One line favors the magic of healing; the other, maleficia。 The two lines converge when Frances, of the maleficia ilk, uses magic to force her stepdaughter Annis to fall in love with and marry an English aristocrat。 Frances, who grew up in poverty, wants nothing more than a royal title。 Harriet, who is the antithesis to Frances and well-versed in the art of healing, must battle Frances for Annis’s fat Louisa Morgan’s The Age of Witches follows two disparate lines of Bridget Byshop’s descendants。 One line favors the magic of healing; the other, maleficia。 The two lines converge when Frances, of the maleficia ilk, uses magic to force her stepdaughter Annis to fall in love with and marry an English aristocrat。 Frances, who grew up in poverty, wants nothing more than a royal title。 Harriet, who is the antithesis to Frances and well-versed in the art of healing, must battle Frances for Annis’s fate。 This book provides an opportunity for escapism, which is really one of the reasons that I enjoy fantasy novels。 It’s set during The Gilded Age and alternates between the hustle and bustle of New York and a sprawling country estate in England。 It offers romance, familial conflict, history, and, of course, magic。 As I read, I repeatedly found myself considering questions of consent。 Frances so completely subverts the wills of Annis and James to her own。 Magic is often fascinating because it’s about power。 What are people willing to do to satisfy their selfish desires? What if they have unlimited means to pursue these desires? I’m reminded of the corrupt and greedy who exploited the working class during The Gilded Age。 Because there were very few—if any— external checks on their pursuit of power, many were left bereft and destitute。 Magic (power), though alluring, always comes with a cost。 This is a lesson Frances must learn。 。。。more
